Naloga mentorjev pri tem je, da se osredotočijo na osebni in profesionalni razvoj posameznikov, na krepitev njihovih voditeljskih veščin, veščin kritičnega razmišljanja in sprejemanja odločitev in jih pripravijo na prevzemanje zanje najustreznejših vlog. S tem uresničujejo enega ključnih ciljev mentorstva, to je vključujoče vodenje in odgovorno ravnanje v poslovanju. Kot je rekel znani trener ameriške nacionalne nogometne lige (NFL) Gregg Williams: »postavi ljudi na mesto, kjer bodo lahko uspešni in navdušili vas bodo. Združi jih v pravo kombinacijo in zmagali bodo«. Ljudje so zavzeti, ko vloge prilagodiš njihovim naravnim nagnjenjem. Ko vidijo in razumejo širšo sliko in kako pomembna je vloga vsakega od njih, sprejemajo najboljše odločitve in iščejo najboljše rešitve. Zaradi vseh naštetih razsežnosti je mentorstvo nepogrešljivo pri uresničevanju že omenjenih 17 trajnostnih razvojnih ciljev (SDGs). S pomočjo mentorjev posamezniki dobijo širši vpogled in si ustvarijo lastno mnenje glede lokalnih in globalnih vprašanj.
Mentorji v tem procesu delujejo kot izobraževalci, usmerjevalci, vodniki. Na ravni posameznikov preverjajo njihovo razumevanje trajnosti in trajnostnega razvoja, kje se s tem v zvezi nahajajo in kakšna so njihova prepričanja in ravnanja. Posamezniki in skupine se z njihovo pomočjo lotevajo različnih družbenih, okolijskih in ekonomskih izzivov. Mentorji jim pomagajo osvetliti globalna vprašanja in njihov vpliv na lokalno okolje in poslovanje. Pri tem jim ne govorijo, kaj naj storijo, temveč jih spodbujajo, da sami iščejo odgovore, oblikujejo konkretne predloge in jih spreminjajo v rezultate. Z njimi delijo svoje izkušnje in jih po potrebi usmerjajo. Vcepljajo jim trajnostne vrednote, kot so svoboda, enakost, solidarnost, strpnost, spoštovanje narave in varovanje okolja ter deljena odgovornost. Predvsem pa jih opogumljajo, da raziščejo čim več različnih možnosti, da pogledajo globlje in pridejo do lastnih rešitev.
Mentorji so tudi v veliko pomoč pri usmerjanju in podpori zaposlenim skozi različne spremembe, kot so transformacija organizacije, spreminjanje vodenja, poslovnih modelov, procesov, načina dela itd., kar vse vpliva na odnose med zaposlenimi, vodstvom in ostalimi deležniki. Zaposlenim pomagajo sprejeti te spremembe in aktivno sodelovati pri njihovem uvajanju, saj v njih vidijo priložnosti, ne nevarnosti.
Vsi, ki so zavezani uresničevanju trajnostnih ciljev, bi morali prevzeti vlogo mentorjev, predajati svoja znanja in izkušnje, jih osveževati in prevzemati sveže ideje od svojih mentorirancev in s tem prispevati k nujnim spremembam v družbi.
